Isi artikelFocusing exclusively on delinquencies on consumer debt and to the relatively high level of consumer instalment debt to income foster the misleading impression that consumer debt has evolved from a lagging indicator into a leading indicator of cyclical downturns. Delinquencies, however, involve too small a minority of households to be considered representative of the typical household. More important, the steep rise in the value of household assets mitigates the importance of the rise in the amount of household debt. More bankruptcies and higher delinquency rates indicates that some households are unable or unwilling to excersise prudence in lending. They don't prove that the average consumer has taken on more debt than he or she can handle.
