Isi artikelIn spite of the rhetoric of a rising tide of protectionism, the world economy is now more open to trade and investment than a decade ago. International economic policies have been important, but market - driven economic forces have set the stage for those policies and are beyond the control of policy makers. There are now, as there have always been, blemishes on the record and potential threats that need to be countered. There will always be constituencies demanding protection. But viewed on a broad scale, the forces in favor of market competition are strong and unlikely to recede.
