Sampling has distinct advantages in cost, size and quality. This article describes the characteristics of a sample survey, questions to be asked before sampling, quality control and the difference between household surveys and business surveys. The monthly retail trade survey provides a food example of a survey improved since its inception to meet user needs. Sampling issues in the decennial census are also discussed.
