The systemic functional approach perceives transitivity in terms of paradigmatic and syntagmatic relations in the clause, and not the classification of verbs as 'transitive' and 'intransitive'. Following her dissertation on transitivity in contemporary Bahasa Indonesia perceived from the systemic functional perspective, in this article, the writer tries to suggest that the transitivity in Bahasa Indonesia not be perceived as a characteristic related to verbs, but alternatively, as a characteristic of clauses.
