Isi artikelThe electric utility industry is rushing toward a new era of competition. The vertically integrated monopoly suppliers of service are fast becoming dinosaurs of a past era. The power generation side of the business will become a commodity business, driven primarily by cost minimization considerations. Transmission is likely to assume a regulated common carrier status, and local distribution companies will emerge as full service suppliers of the energy needs, both gas and electric, to their customers. In the near term, investors will find utility investments to be increasingly risky, as the ultimate recovery if stranded costs is resolved. Electric power users will see moderating pressures for rate increases and in the longer term, real reductions in rates.
