Isi artikelWhile global demand for capital is likely to rise more rapidly than in the past, much of the increased demand is likely to be financed by higher domestic savings. In east asia, the strong demands I outline are likely to be accompanied by continued high growth, falling dependency ratios and therefore, continued high saving rates. The trend of low saving rates in industrialized countries could be reversed as the population ages and saves more. Most important to future demand for world savings is fiscal policy and public dissaving in the industrialized countries. If current trends continue, structural changes in social spending could reduce this source of demand, indeed as the population ages and pension funds grow, pressures for better returns by investing more abroad could generate more capital for developing country needs.
