Isi artikelThis article compares and contrasts american and european direct investment in japan on a number of dimensions. It reports on a longitudinal study of the development of european direct investment in japan by the auhtors, the latest stage of which has been conducted in parallel with a study for the american chamber of commerce prepared by A. T. Kearney Inc. Following an explanation of the methods employed by the two studies, a conceptual framework is presented that addresses the reasons behind the low levels of foreign direct investment in japan. The article also reports the comparative results of the two studies relating to organizational change, manufacturing and R & D in japan, motivations for direct investment in japan, and the key success factor for the companies.
