Recent economic and political developments, however, have made the goal of monetary union appear increasingly elusive. This article highlights some of the difficulties for monetary union and proposes key factors that need to be in place for monetary union to be successful. The author suggests an equally viable alternative to the "official" route to monetary union, which the capital markets are suggesting is more likely.
