The sciences, literature, the plastic and scenic arts, philosophy, theology, religious expression, whether liturgical or popular (and in their mass expression, the mass media), are the scenarios in which suffering appears, on various occasions, as an ingredient of the human condition, so obvious and at the same time so inseparable from that condition, and also so resistant to an understanding that is satisfactory at a rational level.
