Isi artikelAngiogenesis, or the ingrowth of new blood vessels, is needed for the growth and maintenance of tumors. This process not only provides access to nutrients and a means of eliminating waste by a process other than simple diffusion, but also promotes dissemination of cancer to distant sites. Angiogenesis is initiated by cytokines or growth factors released by cancer cells or other cells within the microenvironment surrounding the tumor. Within a variety of cancers, the degree of angiogenesis correlates with propensity of regional and distant metastases, risk of recurrent disease, and patient survival. In fact, angiogenesis may be an independent prognostic indicator. Future research will be directed toward antiangiogenesis therapy, which has many theoretical advantages over conventional cytotoxic chemotherapy.
