Most general and colorectal surgeons deal with anorectal sepsis on a regular basis. Certain conditions, however, predispose a person to the development of more complex anorectal sepsis, in which the treatment is much more challenging and controversial. The onset of the AIDS epidemic has increased the frequency with which sexually transmitted diseases of the anorectum are seen. The authors contend that a working knowledge of these conditions is essential for all practicing colorectal surgeons.
