Rectovaginal fistulas are abnormal, epithelium-lined communications between the rectum and the vagina. Difficulties in treatment challenge the patient and the surgeon. This article discusses the etiology, evaluation, and classification of rectovaginal fistulas nec-essary to facilitte decision making in the management of this disease.
