This article provides a historical and recent review of the evolution of hepatic resection for colorectal metastases since World War II. In addition, it analyzes the factors that influence survival preoperatively, intraoperatively, and postoperatively. It explains the anatomy and surgical technique required for hepatic resection. It discusses adjuvant therapy, intraoperative ultrasonography, regional infusion therapy, and cryotherapy. Finally, it proposes an algorithm for the evaluation and treatment of hepatic metastasis from colorectal carcinoma.
