Whether extrinsic compression of the mesenterjc vessels can cause intestinal ischemia is still debatable. This analysis of the literature supports the view that celiac artery compression syndromes are rare, but do exist. Careful diagnosis and case selection, together with complete revascularization (rather than simple release of compression) of the visceral arteries will effectively treat truly disabling pain in this small group of patients.
