The introduction of laparoscopic cholecystectomy has many parallels in surgical practice, such as transurethral resection of the prostate and arthroscopic surgery. There are many challenges implicit in training practicing surgeons and residents in these new techniques, but in principle, a sound grounding in the basic sciences and an ordered approach will help ensure that the transition from open to laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a painless one.
