Isi artikel
Elderly patients who incur functional losses following surgery may benefit from rehabilitation intervention. Physical performance is affected by the aging process. Moreover, deleterious sequelae of bed rest and immobility occur more rapidly and profoundly with advanced age. A timely rehabilitation program aimed at preventing or reversing the effects of prolonged immobilization, as well as promoting optimal levels of physical and social abilities can decrease the length of the hospital stay, increase the likelihood of discharge to the home setting, and improve the patient’s quality of life. The surgeon should be familiar with the concepts of rehabilitative care, and should know when and for which purposes to consult members of the rehabilitation team.
