Head and neck surgical considerations in the elderly are those of malignancy and reconstruction. The operative morbidity and mortality rates are less than those for other sites in older patients and the same as those found in younger patients with head and neck cancer. A careful preoperative evaluation is emphasized. Patients should not undergo a lesser procedure because of age alone.
