The perianesthetic management of the elderly patient depends on a clear understanding of the physiologic and anatomic changes that occur with aging. Questions that arise when one considers these changes include the following: (1) How are pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of anesthetic medications different in elderly patients, (2) What organ systems changes in the elderly patient alter anesthetic management, (3) What is the perianesthetic risk for elderly patients, (4) What anesthetic prescription best meets the needs of the elderly patient, and (5) What special post-anesthetic needs do elderly patients have?
