Isi artikelAs the mean age of our population increases, surgeons will perform more surgical procedures on the very elderly. Surgeons are, therefore, obligated to be cognizant of the normal physiologic changes that occur in various organ systems with aging, as these changes will greatly affect preoperative and postoperative management. This article identifies the physiologic changes that occur with aging in various organ systems (e.g., cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, gastrointestinal, and endocrine), and relates these functional changes to problems the surgeon may encounter when operating on the elderly patient.
