The entire spectrum of benign and malignant disease of the pancreas can occur in the aged. Two conditions—acute pancreatitis secondary to gallstones and pancreatic carcinoma—are by far the most common of the pancreatic disorders encountered. The management of diseases of the pancreas is no different in older patients than in younger patients. The key to optimal results and to avoiding complications is early diagnosis and aggressive surgical management.
