Aging is an extremely important and complex biologic phenomenon. Currently, we have only an incomplete understanding of the fundamental molecular mechanisms involved with this process. All aging changes have a cellular basis, and aging is, perhaps, best studied at the cellular level under defined and controlled environmental conditions. Scientists are now applying the powerful tools of molecular biology to test the leading hypotheses of aging. The results of these studies should serve to advance the understanding of aging and to focus future research efforts.
