Physiologic and pathologic changes in the small bowel with aging are relatively uncommon. Hemorrhage, ischemia, neoplasms, in-flammatory lesions, and obstruction all occur in older patients, but only ischemia can be considered a disease of aging. Consider-ation of all these lesions in older patients is warranted, however, because of the special diagnostic and therapeutic concerns these disorders present when they occur in this age group. Similarly, although abdominal wall hernias occur in younger as well as older patients, the types of hernia and the approach to treatment in the elderly deserve special consideration.
