Psychiatric disorders often complicate the care of elderly surgical patients. Accurate diagnosis and effective management depend on knowledge of the characteristics of these disorders and on the ability of the clinician to perform a basic psychiatric evaluation. This article describes procedures for the preoperative screening and postoperative monitoring of elderly surgical patients and reviews the diagnosis and management of the most important conditions affecting these patients—delirium, dementia, and major depression.
