The safe surgical treatment of patients with peripheral vascular disease mandates cost effective yet purposeful assessment of cardiac risk in the preoperative period, as well as skillful perioperative management. This article reviews both the sensitivity and specificity of commonly used diagnostic tests and relates these data to the outcome from various types of vascular reconstructions.
