The development and clinical application of ultrasonography for the treatment of diseased arteries is presented and the historical background is discussed. Early work from in vitro studies to animal models is described. The procedures and instrumentation used in the clinical performance of ultrasound angiop~asty are detailed, and the clinical results, limitations, and potential advantages of this technique as a new therapeutic modality are enumerated.
