Isi artikelLaser angioplasty has shown encouraging preliminary results but the long-term effectiveness of this technique has been limited, potentially by the injury associated with adjunctive balloon angioplasty. In addition, recanalization of total occlusions is often difficult because guidance is poor and probes are deflected into the subintima even when wavelengths that ablate fibrotic or calcified plaque are used. Before this technology can be of significant benefit in the treatment of peripheral vascular disease, new advances in guidance systems, delivery devices, and laser sources are needed to improve plaque removal and to obviate the need for subsequent balloon angioplasty.
