Surgical reconstruction techniques for lower extremity ischemic disease have become more sophisticated, and anastomosis to the vessels of the lower leg and foot are now possible. Similarly, the miniaturization of catheters and angioplasty balloons has allowed percutaneous treatment of these small vessels. Concurrent advances in angiography equipment, imaging hardware and software, contrast agents and injectors, and pharmacologic techniques have allowed the detailed resolution of the distal vasculature necessary for today’s therapeutic possibilities.
