Simple clinical assessment of intestinal viability during operations for intestinal ischemia has not proved to be accurate. Failure to remove nonviable bowel Or Unnecessary resection of viable bowel can both drastically affect patient morbidity and mortality. Technical aids to better define the status of questionably viable bowel are presented and their roles are discussed.
