The selection of an appropriate oral, enteral, or parenteral diet is crucial to the successful management of patients with AIDS. The author has designed specific nutritional therapy algorithms for these patients who have normal gut function or the different enteropathies. The author strongly believes that nutritional homeostasis may prevent progressive weight loss, reduce the frequency of secondary infections, augment responses to chemotherapy, perhaps retard the deterioration of the immune system, and ultimately improve the overall quality of life and sense of well-being of patients with AIDS.
