Isi artikel
In selected malnourished patients, perioperative nutritional sup-port can decrease morbidity and mortality rates associated with major surgical procedures. Perioperative nutrition should be given via the gastrointestinal tract whenever feasible as oral supplements or by tube feedings. Total parenteral nutrition should be the mainstay of perioperative nutritional support when the gastrointestinal tract cannot be used adequately. Current nutrient formulas are probably deficient for meeting the nutritional and metabolic needs of the intestinal tract. In the future, the combined use of specific nutrients and growth factors may improve nutritional rehabilitation in catabolic surgical patients.
