The management of patients with malignant pleural effusions (MPE) is highly variable. Patient care should emphasize paffiation, not pleurodesis. Treatment of MPE with chronic indwelling catheters appears to carry a significant advantage over more traditional methods, and the catheters may be placed and managed in the outpatient clinic. Regardless of modality, treatment goals are to relieve dyspnea, improve function, minimize or eliminate hospitalization, and reduce health care costs.
