Isi artikel
The incidence of esophageal cancer is sharply increasing in the Western world. Surgery is the treatment of choice for most localized esophageal cancer patients; however, despite complete tumor resection, systemic and local recurrences are common, and 5-year survival rates range from 15% to 39%. The role of multimodality therapy in the treatment of esophageal cancer is unclear. Many phase II and III studies have been conducted to determine whether or not there is an advantage to such treatment modalities. The results of recent multimodality trials that focus on several different approaches are summarized in this article.
