Lessons learned from the management of civilian and wartime vascular injuries have established an important framework for the treatment of arterial and venous injuries. Nevertheless, evolving principles and techniques that are forming the basis of the new field of endovascular surgery are now providing additional options for the treatment of vascular trauma that supplement the traditional approaches of classic operative repair. Expeditious treatment at the time of diagnostic angiography, improved access to anatomically challenging target lesions, and an associated reduction of morbidity and mortality are the potential advantages of transcatheter-based therapy for the injured vessel.
