This article reviews the pathophysiology of gastroesophageal var-ices, and outlines a systematic approach to management. The pharmacologic treatment of variceal bleeding and the prophylactic approaches to prevent bleeding are discussed. Endoscopic and surgical techniques and their timing in the management of patients with variceal bleeding are outlined. Also, an algorithm is provided to guide the clinical management of these patients.
