Isi artikelToday the insurance industry feels that it is under siege from all sides. Its limited antitrust exemption makes it an inviting target for industry critics who argue for greater federal oversight. Consumer groups and congressional committees charge that the current system of state regulation, with a minimum of regulatory coordination between states, has resulted in a crazy - quilt pattern of rules, regulations, and forms that drive up the price of insurance, confuse individual insureds, and needlessly complicate insurance company operations. In spite of their clamor, it does not appear that the critical mass for change to a federally based regulation system either exists or will develop in the near future.
