Classic patterns of injury occur in child abuse and are elucidated through a variety of imaging techniques. Skeletal manifestations, particularly metaphyseal lesions, are the most distinctive features of abuse. Extraskeletal manifestations of abuse, such as abdominal and cranial injuries, are readily detected with the newer imaging modalities, including ultrasonography, CT scanning, and MR imaging. Awareness is essential for a complete understanding of this major public health problem.
