Isi artikelM2 growth is weak and below its forecasted value from late 1990 to 1992. The causes are probably increased reinvestment risk of M2 introduced by FIRREA and credit crunches caused by regional banking downturns. Traditional models of money demand and supply do not account for reinvestment risk and bottlenecks in the deposit creation process. A regional analysis of contraction in small time deposits shows that M2 is most depressed in the region safficted by credit crunches. The credit crunch, however, is not being exacerbated by weak M2 growth.
