The transmission of HIV-1 from infected women to their infants is the primary mode of pediatric HIV-1 infection. The vertical transmission of HIV-2 may occur during gestation (in Utero), delivery (intrapartum), or breastfeeding (postpartum). This article outlines how multiple aspects of the virus-host dynamic have been examined as potential explanations for the observed interpatient variability in disease progression following vertical HIV-1 infection.
