After a brief review of post progress toward unification, this paper describes the maastricht proposals for monetary union and then examines the degree in which various countries meet the necessary criteria for a union. In the future, teh author sees the emergence of about five country groups that will, through single market arrangements, increase their interdependence, leading to ultimate convergence.
