Reacting to the ever present barrage about the role of economists, the speech focuses on two separate issues. The first issue is the relevance of economic thinking to the business decision process. After demonstrating a number of situations where economic tools help assess change, economics is found to be even more relevant today than twenty years ago. If so, the next issue is how to ensure that economists are engaged in that process. We need to address a variety of factors if we are to be successful and promote the profession. One is to institute promote the profession. One is to institute a certification process to ensure a performance standard and an element of quality control for customers of a "business economists".
