The 40-hectare pond at Allimboule is rich with fish and serves not only as a major gathering point for ibis, teal, ducks, and other migratory birds, but also for people and cattle. For a long time the pond caused death and disease because of the filth and sewage in the water, but now it is a source of life, for both people and cattle. Water is relatively scarce in Niger. The flow of the Niger River varies significantly from year to year depending on rainfall. In an area that has experienced large-scale land degradation and water scarcity, the Allimboule project is part of a larger 10-year effort funded by the Government of Niger and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The programme has succeded in integrating water management decisions into all facets of community life (role of women in decision making, stressing the importance of water as an economic resource that should not be taken for granted. Local villager have been able to reserve the damage to the pond and their drinking water and have begun to change some of their habits. Women were taught how to boil and filter water, while men were instructed on technology and fisheries. Women in the villages of Ngari and Bankilare always bore the heavy burden of searching drinking water. In Bankilare, only five wells served a population of 8,000. Women battled all day long for a can of water. Local engineers built dam with support from a Niger research group known as Senagrhy. At the request of the villagers, the resevoir was stocked with fish. "This dan has completely transformed our way of life and our habits. There is real improvement." says Mrs. Ahmed.
