Isi artikelOf key importance when considering universal hearing screening are how many infants are born in the United States each year with hearing loss and what are the performance characteristics of a screening protocol in terms sensitivity, specificity, and predictive value. Congenital hearing loss is rare, the argument has been made so many infants might have to be screened in order to find one with hearing loss that the screening procedure could be difficult on either cost or human terms. A comparison of the widely quoted figures, 1 of every 1000 children is born deaf, against available data-driven studies indicates that estimates of prevalence in the universal newborn population vary from slightly less than 1 in 1000 for permanent bilateral hearing loss greater than 35 dB to almost 6 in 1000 when unilateral and moderate hearing infants are counted. These may be contrasted with the high incidence of hearing loss in a targeted or NICU population.
