Isi artikelBone marrow transplantation (BMT) is performed for a variety of hematologic and solid-tumor malignancies from either allogenic or autologous hematopoietic stem cell sources. Stem cell sources include bone marrow, umbilical cord blood, and peripheral blood stem cells. Disease-free survival depends on the phase of disease at the time of transplantation. Early and late post-BMT complications include acute and chronic graft versus host disease, infections, delayed immune reconstitution, pulmonary and endocrine dysfunction, recurrent leukemia and secondary malignancies. Despite these problems, BMT is the treatment of choice for high-risk patients in first remission, patients with CML and chronic-phase CML, and patients who relapse after standard therapy.
