Isi artikelThis article documents the increasingly important role of small firms in high - technology industries during the 1976 - 86 decade. The causes of greater small firm influence are also occuring in big business : shorter product life cycles from the demand side, and an increasing use of flexible manufacturing systems and decreased reliance on scale economied from the supply side. The article attributes part of the differential success of small high - tech firms to the support of state and local governments as well as an array of networks that help increase the survival of many of these firms. Most important, the availability of financing, sometiems as a corporate spinoff, helped to increase the survival rates of these firms.
