Isi artikel
With the valiant assistance of Andrew Stansfield, I convened the first global cyberconference on Public Understanding of Science (PUS) from 25 February to 11 March, 1998. The conference was the first phase of a pilot program by the United Kingdom’s main state funding agency for social science research, the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). With the dawn of the new millenium, the ESRC is expected to decide whether Public Understanding of Science will become a regular funding stream. I begin this report by surveying the British PUS scene that forms the immediate background of the cyberconference. I then turn to the intellectual motivation for the conference and the technical features of its execution. Afterward, two general sets of issues raised during the cyberconference are explored in some detail: the prospects for the “deficit” model of PUS and alternative perspectives on the “multicultural” character of PUS. Finally, I consider the public exposure given to the cyberconference and directions in which both the concept and this particular instance of it may be taken in the future.
