Amenorrhea, or the absence of menses, is common during adolescence. The adolescent patient with amenorrhea often presents to the primary care provider. A basic understanding of menstrual and pubertal physiology will enable the clinician to initiate an appropriate evaluation. Usually, an accurate diagnosis can be obtained quickly. Management includes restoring ovulatory cycles if possible, replacing estrogen when necessary, reassurance, and re-evaluation.
