Abstract
Although theoretically sound, Richard Feynman’s vision of molecular engineering sketched out in his 1959 lecture, “There’s Plenty of Room at the Bottom,” sounded like little more than raw material for science fiction. A few decades later, Feynman’s expectations of the possibility of reconstituting matter at the atomic level has not only become reality, but nanotechnology is positioned to usher in a series of dramatic technical and social revolutions. Despite the fact that nanotechnology or the ability to restructure matter at an atomic and molecular level is still in its infancy, there is no doubt that that this latest emergent constellation of technology has the potential of fundamentally transforming the material and social world we inhabit. Although there is indeed plenty of room at the bottom for effecting material transformations, it is also clear that, given the speed with which nanotechnology is evolving, time is running out for contemplating appropriate social responses to the technical challenges that have already begun to emerge.
