The role of SMEs in Indonesia were very important. It is shown by its performances that it increases from 34.5 million in 1997 to 42.4 million units in 2003. This was about 99.8 percent of total enterprises. SMEs play important role in absorbing labor in which it absorbed more than 66 million persons or two-third of total labor force, and its contribution is nearly two-third to national output. This can be said that SMEs, mostly micro finances, has a vital pivot in Indonesian economy. However, many problems have been faced such capital deficiency due to the banking regulation in channeling the credit. Other problems are related to SMEs in managing the business such as managerial aspects, and aspects to be managed such human being. Human being including labor and managerial, whereas enterprises including characteristic of companies and technology. This article will describe the performances of SMEs, mostly micro-finances, the management of SMEs in controlling their business, and government efforts in empowering SMEs in Indonesia.
