Corn is chosen as a case study because it shows a remarkable turn - around from being a net importer during most of 1990s to become a net - importer for the first time in 1998. The results show that despite risen domestic resource cost due to rupiah depreciation, corn's comparative advantage increased greatly in these years, compared to the period before the crisis. Rising corn output price, both at the domestic and export markets, appears to hav eoffset rising costs resulting from increased input border price. While tariff on imported corn has declined, during the crisis corn stil received a positive effective protection rate. This is because the indonesian government still provides a significant level of fertilizer subsidy, which offset the decline in the commodity's nominal protection rate.
