Isi artikelThis paper is a study to examine whether the first language influences the acquisition of the second language. The data are taken from the writings of engineering students who wrote a summary of their final project in English. Ten reports were randomly selected for the purpose of this study. It is evident that when the students use English, it is unconsciously influenced by their native language. The influence is interpreted from the perspective of language transfer theory. Transfer may result from the differences between the native language and the target language. The literature shows that there are two kinds of language transfer grouped into positive and negative. It seems that the students’ writings tend to be in the negative transfer domain. This study will provide insight into appropriate teaching methods to achieve better ways on second language teaching.
